1. Introduction
The Han River(=Hangang) is a large river that runs through Seoul, and there are several parks along the Han River. From spring to autumn, it is a popular recreational area for Seoul citizens.
Eating chicken and beer, known as ‘치맥’ (chimaek) in Korean, by the Han River is considered one of the most romantic summer night activities among Koreans. This combination of chicken and beer is highly popular among Koreans and is influenced by the perception that these two foods pair well together. Whether with family, friends, or a lover, you can enjoy the romantic ambiance of the Han River.
While Yeouido Hangang Park and Banpo Hangang Park are the largest and most famous locations, they can be crowded due to their popularity. Therefore, I’d like to recommend some lesser-known Han River parks located in Sangam-dong. These are places I truly love and frequently visit.
If your accommodation is near Hongdae, visiting these nearby places could be a great idea.
All Hangang (Han River) parks have paid parking. It’s very affordable, with the initial 30 minutes costing 1,000 won, and an additional 200 won for every 10 minutes.
2. Han River Parks to go

I. Seoul Battleship Park

The Seoul Battleship Park is Seoul’s first naval-themed park, created using three decommissioned military ships, including the Seoul Battleship, which served in maritime defense for 30 years, as well as the Chamsuri and a submarine. Preserving their original forms, these three retired warships offer a unique space for exhibitions and experiences not typically seen, providing citizens visiting Seoul’s Hangang Park with new attractions and entertainment options for a special and unique experience.

II. Various Retaurants and Starbucks

When you enter Mangwon Hangang Park, you’ll notice a large building on the Han River. Inside, you’ll find restaurants like Korean barbecue, fried chicken, Starbucks coffee, and Subway sandwiches, where you can enjoy your meal while taking in the Han River view. You can either dine in at the restaurants or take your food to nearby spots for a picnic.
This newly constructed building also has very clean restroom facilities. Additionally, you have the option to board a boat from this location. Exploring and taking a boat ride is highly recommended if you enjoy the area.
However, it’s worth noting that while there are many dining options, Mangwon Hangang Park is easily accessible by public transportation and can get quite crowded. Finding a place to sit might be challenging, so it’s recommended to consider moving to less crowded areas.

III. Bicycle rental shop

Earlier, I mentioned that Mangwon Hangang Park can get quite crowded.
As an alternative, one good option is to pack your food and rent a bicycle here, then head to another park. Riding a bicycle along the Han River and experiencing different parks can be a refreshing change. I sometimes relieve stress by cycling along the Hangang on tough days, and there’s something particularly invigorating about riding a bicycle at night!
Right under Seongsan Bridge, behind the convenience store, you’ll find a bicycle rental station.
IV. Waikiki market

This is a riverside barbecue restaurant with a camping atmosphere along the Han River. On the first floor, you can purchase the food you need, and they provide a grill for you to cook the meat at your table. You can also buy additional items for your meal, such as ramen, snacks, and ice cream. The atmosphere here is fantastic, making it a great place to create memories while enjoying the Han River. I visited with my family, and I remember my 5-year-old niece getting really excited when she saw this place.
But you need to make reservations in advance, and there are time limits for usage. Personally, I recommend going for a Dinner 2 session.
- Lunch (11:30-14:00)
- Dinner 1 (14:30-17:00)
- Dinner 2 (17:30-20:00)
- Dinner 3 (20:30-23:00)
The operating hours vary depending on the season. Be sure to check in advance and make a reservation.
You can also ride a motorboat here, which costs around 10,000 won per person, and the ride lasts about 5 minutes. Waterskiing and wakeboarding are also available.

V. Mulgyul Hangang

It’s a recently opened café on the Hangang, and I happened to stop by while I was out biking along the river. The Vienna coffee was really delicious, and the view was breathtaking. Let’s visit for some tasty coffee!
Personally, the cream latte and cream chocolate were delicious. (A bit sweet).

VI. Han river forest

This is my favorite spot by the Hangang. There aren’t too many people, and the grass is so lush and green that it’s the perfect place to lay out a mat and relax.
With unobstructed views, you’ll understand why it’s recommended once you visit. Among all the Han River parks I’ve been to, this one is my favorite.
The downside is that it’s not easily accessible by public transportation, so I recommend taking a taxi or, if you have a car, driving there. Alternatively, you can take public transportation to Mangwon Hangang Park and rent a bicycle to get here.
Bring camping chairs or a mat, and just lie down and enjoy the view. You can purchase chicken and beer from nearby places, so bring them along and savor some chicken and beer by the river!

VII. Nanji bicycle park (Bicycle rental shop)

There is another bike rental shop here as well. Feel free to use whichever one is more convenient for you.
There are convenience stores nearby, so you can also purchase any food you need

I’ve heard that even among foreigners, eating ‘치맥’ (chicken and beer) in Korea has become popular these days. It’s truly an excellent choice. I hope you come here and have a wonderful time.
